Benderfender unleashes a barrage of absurdly catchy hooks and breaks from the Rephlex and early Warp school. Braindance master, HAL, sustains the mainstay sound design tricks with pointed vox hits, walking jungle subs, and bitty, time-stretched samples while constantly bending compositions in a fashionable love letter to ADD and OCD. Shuffled through the ambient intro, ‘Void,’ and interlude, ‘xoxo,’ Benderfender approaches granular BPMs with heavy, hyper-edited perc. Almost too meticulous to recount, the 31 plus minutes remain playfully aggressive with each track jam-packed with unique complexities. The five-track stretch before the ‘xoxo’ interlude, traverses light-hearted harmonies in ‘Birthday Song,’ heavy jungle grooves in ‘Benderfender,’to a heavy forward pounding ‘Fight Song,’ an even heavier supersaw laden ‘Glue Sniffer,’ and a temporarily close with the jazz friendly, hook-filled ‘Mad Men.’ The three tracks proceeding and closing do more than enough to somehow simultaneously scratch your every braindance itch and make you very excited for whatever HAL cooks up next.
