After a long hiatus, Whosehead returns in different form. Long lost are the catchy hats, forward grooves, and syncopated rhythms to a more conceptualized evolving expanses of found sound-like otherworldly textures. Enter to layers of off-balance harmonics, scarce FM and PCM tones, and an overall sense of tribal-celestial horror. Proceeding the opener, ‘curl,’ an experiential duality of sounds emerges: a tenable, expansive outside world and something more intimately unstable. This balance starts to solidify with ‘op-out’ breaking from open textures to some incredibly feel jerking melodies with a closing sense of the unpredictability to come. After a gritty recess through ‘fin,’ ‘in glide’ elegantly refolds these two dynamics continuing flawlessly until the last moments of Free Memory. What’s left is a feeling of crippling loneliness and imminent vulnerability where the known unknowns feel more residual.
